STIFLING URGES AND MURDEROUS TENDENCIES

I paced in front of the marble fountain at the front drive, my heart tapping out a manic beat against my ribs. The cameraman trailed my anxious movements, and I was about a second away from telling him to fuck off.

Because Shep was a dick, he’d insisted I choose two possible bachelors to bring back. He had to drill in the fact that it was possible one or both might not want to return. This game had always been one-sided and the idea that the bachelor I wanted back may not want me anymore was weirdly soul crushing.

So now here I was in the place where the bachelors typically stood wondering if my guy would choose me.

Slade or Flint… who would it be?

When Dax had asked me who I wanted back, Slade was the first bachelor that had popped into my mind. The connection I’d felt with the male was like nothing I’d ever experienced before. Had it been purely lust? Maybe. But I needed to explore that.

Flint had been my second choice. I wanted to know more about him. He’d never opened up to me like some of the other bachelors had. Besides those two, the other guy that always popped into my head was my sweet cowboy, Jack. I knew he’d never be allowed to come back with how messed up he’d gotten. I just hoped he was okay.

The creak of the iron gate at the end of the driveway opening sent my swirling thoughts to the back of my mind. An oversized black SUV limo pulled up, and my heart just about exploded out of my chest. I forced my feet to stay still and clasped my hands together to keep from running toward the car like a lunatic. Instead, I focused on the full moon and the twinkling stars in a useless search for Zen.

When the limo stopped in front of the fountain, I gave up and darted down the steps. The driver’s window rolled down, and the friendly Devante shot me a toothy grin. I hadn’t seen the little faery in a while.

“Your bachelor will be out in a moment, Miss Aspen.”

“Thanks, D, I appreciate the announcement.” It wasn’t like I’d already been counting down the seconds or anything.

I jabbed my fingers through my hair. Oops, hopefully I didn’t mess up Barney’s do. Running my hand over the front of the silky black number my stylist had picked out, I smoothed out the short dress. What the hell was taking this guy so long? Was he primping or what? I marched to the backend of the SUV and slapped my hands on my hips. I’d gone from anxious, to nervous, to annoyed in seconds. Was this dude trying to piss me off? Or payback from when I’d eliminated him?

The back door opened a crack, and my heart leapt up my throat. I waited and waited for another endless minute.

“If you don’t come out here right now, I’m sending you back home,” I hissed out.
